About me and the work!
I am Ise Henriques Sharp (b.1998). I am a Jamaican-American artist completing my MA in the Painting Programme at the Royal College of Art in London, UK.
My recent works distil paradoxes of existence into expansive yet intricate paintings exploring polarities, such yin/yang and creation/destruction, and the relativity of time. It has been through quantum physics, creation stories, communion with natural environments, and spiritual contemplation that I have formed my sense of identity and belonging — to nowhere, to myself, to Earth, and to the Universe. It is this notion of being that informs my practice and my relationship with life.
I utilises materials that nod to life and death as I explore the cyclical nature of existence. Each work begins with an explosive expression of chalk on raw linen. I then use pigments from charcoaled bones and fruit seeds through energetic mark making to form realms reminiscent of the cosmos, microbial environments, dreams-scapes, and the untouchable. It’s through this exploration that I have found presence with my own paradoxes – my transnational identity, upbringing between separate households, and negotiation between mind/body/spirit.
